Michael J. Sutherland, MD, MBA, FACS, is the Director of the Division of Member Services, overseeing membership, as well as many of the College’s leadership groups, ACS Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery (ACS H.O.P.E), and Military Health System Strategic Partnership American College of Surgeons (MHSSPACS).
He earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Medicine in New Orleans. Additionally, he has a master of business administration degree from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business in Columbus.
Dr. Sutherland completed his residency in general surgery at the Keesler USAF Medical Center at the Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi and a general thoracic and vascular surgery fellowship at Keesler and the Veterans Affairs Gulf Coast Health Care System in Biloxi, Mississippi. He served in the Air Force for 10 years, including a deployment to Balad, Iraq, in 2005.
His clinical practice has focused on trauma center and trauma systems development. He established trauma centers in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Ohio, serving in leadership roles on the state and regional trauma systems in each state.
Dr. Sutherland continues his clinical practice at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago and Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
