Chapter Leader

There are currently more than 110 domestic and international chapters of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Structure

Customarily, the officers of the chapter—who must be active members of the College—include:

  • President
  • President-Elect or Vice-President(s)
  • Treasurer*
  • Secretary*

*The offices of secretary and treasurer may be combined.

Depending on chapter bylaws, the chapter council may also include 3–9 elected councilors whose elections are staggered to provide for overlapping terms of service.

How Do I Get Elected to a Chapter Council?

  • Be an active member of the College and espouse the mission of the College
  • Be active and support your chapter by participating in chapter events and activities.
  • Express your interests for the chapter, and any suggestions, to current chapter leadership and the Chapter Administrator/staff.

Terms

Terms of officers may be no longer than two years in sequence for any given position.

Duties

  • Communicate on a regular basis with the Division of Member Services via Chapter Services, delivering annual reports and all supporting materials as requested and following requested timelines set by the College.
  • Prepare financial reports for the chapter, including monthly financials, dues reports, annual meeting and other event accountings, etc.
  • Comply with all rules and regulations of the College and any applicable local laws for the Chapter.
  • Promote effectiveness and efficiency of chapter operations.
  • Safeguard all chapter assets.
  • File the necessary forms annually with the IRS to assure that the chapter maintains appropriate non-profit status.

Time Commitment

The time commitment for various chapter officer positions varies. Please refer to the specific duties of each position listed on the Chapter Positions page and confer with the chapter president and administrator for an estimate of possible time spent during tenure for each position.
