Program Requirements

Before accessing the application, please note the following program requirements for potential Junior Associates:

  • All applicants must have completed, or will complete, a surgical residency at an accredited program based in the United States of America or Canada.
  • Meet all individual program requirements as determined by the program site. For more information on these requirements, please review each program site’s profile.

Please note that all participants will be expected to receive a state medical license in the state(s) where programs are located and appropriate privileges at facilities.

The application process for the Mastery in General Surgery Program utilizes an online survey-based format, REDCap. This will allow you to not only navigate the application easier, but progress can be saved throughout the application process.

Required Documents

The following documents are required before an application is considered complete. In preparation of completing the application, please have the following ready:

  • Curriculum Vitae
    • A current CV must be provided for review.
  • Letter(s) of Reference
    • At least one letter of reference supporting your participation in the Mastery in General Surgery Program is required. The letter(s) should be from a department chair and/or program director. Letters may uploaded into the application or be sent directly from the author to MasteryGS@facs.org.
  • Residency Program Status, Board Eligibility, or Certification
    • Supporting documentation illustrating your residency standing, American Board of Surgery Eligibility, or Certification. A letter from your program or from you attesting to this is acceptable.
  • State Medical License
    • Documentation supporting appropriate state medical licensure. The license does not need to be from the state in which the programs are located. A current training license is acceptable.

Application Fee

Upon receiving the completed application and all supporting documentation, outlined above, the Mastery in General Surgery Program Team will contact you regarding payment of the application fee. Please note the application fee is non-refundable. Before an application is submitted to the sites selected, the payment of the associated application fee must be verified. The fee is a flat rate based on the number of sites to which you wish to send the application.

For the 2025-2026 academic year, the fee structure will be assessed as follows:

  • Applying to five (5) or fewer sites - $75
  • Applying to six (6) or more sites - $150

When payment has been verified, you will receive a receipt for future reference. The application will then be disseminated to the sites listed in the application.

Decisions

Hiring decisions are made by each site. An application does not guarantee an interview, offer, or position. Hiring is conducted on a rolling basis. Therefore, the earlier the application is submitted, the better the chance you have to be considered for a position. As the positions are filled, the application form will be updated.
