The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching, sponsored by the ACS Division of Education, is given each year in recognition of excellence in teaching by a resident and to emphasize teaching as an important area in residents’ daily lives.
In 2024, the 22nd annual ACS Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching was presented to Rick D. Vavolizza, MD.
Candidates who show outstanding contributions to educational activities, educational publications, teaching award recipients and provide course instruction are strongly encouraged for consideration.
2025 Call for Nominations
The ACS Division of Education is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2025 ACS Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching. Nominations can be submitted through the online application from April 21, 2025 to June 9, 2025.
Qualifications
Eligible nominees are residents in good standing in an accredited surgery residency program, including specialty programs. Graduating chief residents are eligible. Residents must have received prior recognition of their outstanding efforts in teaching by having received internal teaching awards at their current institution. Teaching efforts directed toward medical students, fellow residents, or other allied health personnel can be recognized. These are the areas upon which the candidates will be evaluated:
Teaching awards
Courses taught
Educational activities
Educational publications
Documentation supporting teaching excellence may be furnished in the form of evaluations completed by students. Efforts made by the nominee to improve the educational environment of the institution by serving on education committees, organizing courses, or participating in educational programs will also be considered in the selection process. Nominations will be accepted from program directors and department chairs and will be reviewed by an independent review panel of the ACS Committee on Resident Education. Each surgery residency program, including specialty programs, may nominate one resident.
