As an internationally renowned oncology surgeon, with a lifetime of accomplishments, Dr. Brennan has much to share about his life and illustrious career during this Fireside Chat.
Murray Brennan, GNZM, MD, FACS, MAMSE, is an oncologic surgeon-scientist. He was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1985 until June 2006, and from 2010 served as Vice President of International Programs and Director of the Bobst International Center and since 2018 as Senior Vice President of International Programs. Dr. Brennan is a Founding Member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators and serves on its Steering Committee.
Dr. Brennan has lectured throughout the world and authored or co-authored more than 1,100 scientific papers and book chapters, and three books on soft tissue sarcoma. He has served as Director of the American Board of Surgery, Vice President of the American College of Surgeons, Chairman of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the James IVth Association, the Society of Clinical Surgery, the International Gastric Cancer Association, and the American Surgical Association. He has been awarded Honorary Fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Edinburgh, England, Australasia, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Canada, along with honorary fellowships in multiple distinguished international surgical societies. Dr. Brennan has received Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh, Otago, Goteborg and University College of London. In 1995 Dr. Brennan was honored with membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2000 he received the American College of Surgeons' highest award, the Distinguished Service Award. In January 2015, he was appointed by Her Majesty The Queen as Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
The host for the Fireside Chat is Mohsen M. Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, MAMSE, Vice President/Chief Medical Officer of the Wellspan Surgery Service Line, York, PA. Dr. Shabahang joined Wellspan in the summer of 2021. He serves as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Novel Teaching and Assessment Methods and Educational Resources for the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE, Director of the ACS Division of Education and Co-Chair, Steering Committee of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, will give welcoming remarks.
The ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators Fireside Chat Series was developed as an outcome of discussions of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators Special Committee to Address Challenges and Opportunities Relating to Surgery Residency Training during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The committee was charged to address the challenges faced by educators and to harness innovative opportunities in surgical education. The Fireside Chat Series will enable programs and their learners to have access to valuable talks and discussions with experts both in a synchronous and asynchronous manner.
