Program Highlights

The Junior Associate at Geisinger has a unique opportunity to structure a year that is designed to benefit and meet the individual needs and interests of the associate.  The Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA is a tertiary care center with multiple surgical subspecialties.  There are four additional community practice sites within the Geisinger Health System in Bloomsburg, Shamokin, and Muncy, PA. Opportunities exist for the Junior Associate to participate in a diverse range of subspecialties, depending on individual interest; these include trauma and acute care surgery, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology/breast surgery, minimally invasive/bariatric surgery, basic endoscopy, and community general surgery.  Geisinger also has an associated surgical residency program.  The Junior Associate will interact with surgical residents and may be involved with surgical education.  The Junior Associate is given autonomy while developing an independent practice, with assistance and guidance available as needed.  The Junior Associate schedule will be designed to complement that of the residency program so that the residents can serve as first assists and learners to the Junior Associate at times. The Junior Associate will be responsible for his or her own clinics and have dedicated operative block time and will also have freedom to operate independently without an assistant. The Junior Associate will also have an opportunity to learn and review concepts regarding practice management including billing and RVU structure.

Program Description

The central location for the Junior Associate will be primarily divided between the Geisinger Danville and Bloomsburg campuses; however, there is potential for time to be spent at several different Geisinger campuses depending on interests. There will also be Senior Associates designated for all clinical activities to ensure oversight and guidance. The Junior Associate will also be included in the robust residency didactic program which includes clinical, didactic, simulation, and research teaching, as well as M&M conferences and Grand Rounds lectures. The program also wants to provide enough flexibility so that the Junior Associate can tailor their schedule to fit their particular needs and interests.
