The program is intended to enhance and hone the Junior Associate’s confidence and skills in a holistic fashion. Monthly meetings will help continuously adjust the program to the Associate’s needs, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. There is an opportunity to perform an elective month, as well as a 1-week global health experience with a surgical mission abroad.
The Associate will spend the year as a General Surgery/MIS/Acute Care Surgery faculty. This includes a variety of hernias, cholecystectomies, common bile duct explorations, and bowel obstructions, with exposure to bariatrics, foregut, colorectal, surgical oncology, and robotics depending on the needs of the Associate. Clinical responsibilities will include running their own outpatient clinic to develop an elective practice, dedicated OR time will also be available. The program intends to maintain a balance between outpatient as well as inpatient pathology. Acute care surgery and emergency room call is distributed equally among the faculty.
The Junior Associate will function as a faculty member with graduated supervision. Monthly meetings will include feedback on technical skills, clinical judgment, and surgical knowledge. Non-technical skills such as communication skills, interactions with patients, and interactions with other team members, such as staff from other departments, will also be evaluated. This will also be an opportunity for the Associate to identify areas for more focus or exposure. After six months a discussion between the Junior Associate and Senior Associates will determine how confident the Junior Associate feels in their skills. The final six months of the program will be tailored to the Junior Associate in order to achieve these goals.
The Junior Associate will increase their autonomy at their own pace, until they and the senior faculty feel ready to operate and manage patients independently. This will be performed while always providing backup and support.
The Junior Associate will have access to, and participate in, Mayo Clinic content for incoming faculty as well as conferences regarding medical liability and contract negotiations. The Junior Associate will also have opportunities to be part of quality improvement projects and patient safety initiates throughout the institution. Direct mentorship and coaching will also be provided.
At the end of the academic year, senior staff will meet with the Junior Associate to review all the assessments, evaluations, and feedback from the staff. They will also analyze the clinical and operative experience obtained during the year to provide a final evaluation. Research and quality improvement projects will also be taken into account. The program will include weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, bi-weekly surgical grand rounds, and a stipend for CME conferences.
