Metro Surgical is a private practice group based in Savannah, Georgia. There are a total of 8 surgeons in our practice with a wide variety of surgical interests. We host a high-volume operative program with minimal requirements aside from clinical responsibilities. We have one fellowship trained colorectal surgeon, one fellowship trained hepatobiliary surgeon, and two fellowship trained critical care surgeons. The surgeons at Metro Surgical each have a sizeable elective case load in addition to our group’s high-volume of acute care surgery cases.
The Junior Associates rotate between St. Joseph’s Hospital and Candler Hospital which are a10-minute drive from each other. Our hospital system is considered a tertiary care system for the region. Our Associates routinely perform at least 600 cases each. Roughly 35-40% of cases the fellow will perform are robotic followed by roughly 35% laparoscopic and roughly 25% open. We aim to ensure our Associates have the tools they need to be able to practice in either a rural or urban setting by the time they graduate. One of the main goals of our program is to tailor our training to each individual Associate’s goals and/or deficiencies; this includes opportunities for robotic surgery, endoscopy, and travel to courses or meetings based on their clinical interests and/or areas for growth.
Each of our surgeons has had years of experience with both surgical education and leadership. As such, our group provides a high level of training and mentorship to our Junior Associates.
Our surgical group also has practice locations across Georgia (Sylvania, Rincon, Pooler, Jesup, Richmond Hill), as well as South Carolina (Bluffton). These are available for the Junior Associate if they wish to mature their rural experience. Our hospital also serves a tertiary referral center for several outlying hospitals, particularly for complex colorectal, hepatobiliary, oncologic, and abdominal wall cases.
The Associate is allowed to pick and choose which cases they prefer to cover. Occasionally, the Associate will be expected to cover large or complex cases. The Associate is also expected to take call roughly 2 weekends each month with the surgeon on call. There is always backup for our Associates for all facets of the fellowship. With graduated autonomy, we expect that our Associates will be able to operate efficiently and independently by the end of the year at the latest. The Associates are required to log their cases in the Surgeon Specific Registry through the ACS website throughout the year.
An initial interview will establish expectations and goals of the Junior Associate. Constant constructive feedback will be given during cases. Every three months, the program director will meet with the Associates to discuss their progress and to ensure that the experience is helping them achieve the set goals of the year.
At the intake meeting, we will establish goals for the year, and ensure those are being met at subsequent meetings. Each Associate’s experience will be personalized to optimize professional and personal growth. The final assessment of the Associate will be performed through a meeting format in which the compilation of evaluations will be reviewed. The exit interview will also include any opportunity for feedback towards changes in the program.
Our Associates will have the opportunity to learn billing and collections with our staff. Learning opportunities for quality improvement, safety initiatives, and more, will be present throughout the Junior Associate’s experience if desired. Advice and mentorship are also provided by our senior surgeons for contract negotiations and references for job opportunities.
CME activities will be tailored according to the individual needs of the Junior Associate and a wide range of activities are supported. Associates preparing for board exams will have accommodations made for their schedule. We also provide 1 on 1 training and practice sessions for the oral boards. Additionally, conferences, educational materials and training labs (sim/robotic) are paid for by our Program.
Most Associates live in downtown Savannah, a few minutes from campus. The city itself is filled with beautiful squares, several fantastic restaurants, a myriad of events and a bustling nightlife. The beautiful, walkable city coupled with the nearby Tybee Island make Savannah a truly wonderful city to work and live in.
With our high case volume and strong desire to teach, Metro Surgical is driven to create thoughtful, efficient, technically sound and independent surgeons that can practice in any sort of environment. We hope to guide you in the complex transition from residency to independent practice.
