Junior Associates will participate at the faculty level in the full spectrum of the curriculum for the medical students and surgical residents. A scholarly activity component is anticipated under the direction of the Program Chief. In addition, specific funding is anticipated in support of CME activities for maintenance of a license to practice and in preparation for the Qualifying and Certifying examinations of the American Board of Surgery.
The basic didactic curriculum will be based on the SCORE Curriculum of the Surgical Council of Resident Education in parallel with the use of the Curriculum by the surgical residency. All of the experiences in which the Junior Associate participates will be at the single site of NY Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
The basic clinical experience is planned to be in Acute Care, Trauma, and General Surgery with the understanding that additional supervised experiences will be available in Bariatric, Pediatric, Plastic, Robotic, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery.
Program Description
The Junior Associate will participate in on-call coverage for the Trauma and Acute Care service as well as serving as a consultant in the overall General Surgery service. In that role decision-making and case participation will be conducted with the supervision of the Program Chief and Senior Associate Surgeons within a structured pyramidal system of direct and indirect supervision. The Junior Associate will serve on training services at the Attending Faculty level.
Assessment of incoming Junior Associates that did not train at our site will be through the standardized evaluation formats of the Operative Performance Rating System (OPRS) assessment and the Clinical Performance Assessment System that are used by the American Board of Surgery. Six assessments of each type will be required from the program in which the Junior Associate has trained. Within the Program the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) of the Department will be utilized by the Section Chief of General Surgery in conjunction with the Senior Associate Surgeons.
Intake assessment and planning will be based on an initial needs assessment, with Goals and Objectives established within the outline of the SCORE Curriculum of the Surgical Council of Resident Education. Ongoing mentoring will be in conjunction with the plans of the Junior Associate for either clinical practice, additional sub-specialty fellowship or both. The transition to independent practice will be accomplished through graded responsibility, under direct and indirect supervision, with planned periodic assessment.
Scheduled monthly formative feedback sessions with the Senior Associate surgeons will be provided in conjunction with a scheduled quarterly formative feedback session with the Program Chief. The surgical case experience of the Junior Associate will be tracked through participation in the SSR as well as the Institutional NSQIP database and semi-annual report process. The Final Assessment of the Junior Associate will be a summative feedback session incorporating data from throughout the year.
The Junior Associate will learn aspects of practice management, including billing and collections through participation in the NY Presbyterian Medical Group. In support of that experience the Junior Associate will complete the ACS On-Demand CPT Coding Courses. Contract negotiations will be addressed through a specific mentored study of the ACS Resources for the Practicing Surgeon primer series. Medical liability issues, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives will be addressed through four areas of Institutional involvement by the Junior Associate:
individual participation in the ACS SSR,
participation in the Institutional NSQIP program,
mentored direct participation in the Departmental and Institutional Quality Improvement committee structure,
mentored participation in the Institutional occurrence reporting (Keepsafe) system.
