Program Highlights

The Junior Associate will function as a junior faculty member (academic track) or junior partner (community/private track). The breadth of surgical exposure between the two sites allows for support of the Junior Associate without impacting the operative of non-operative experience of our current trainees. When residents are involved in the care of patients cared for by the Junior Associate, the Junior Associate will be expected to perform at an educational level of a junior faculty member or partner.

Program Description

The Junior Associate will be assigned to one of two tracks: community/private practice or academic practice. The academic track will take place at University of Texas Health Science Center—San Antonio and the community/private practice track will take place at General Surgical Associates of San Antonio.

On both tracks, a progressive, graded responsibility model will be used to gradually develop the Mastery in General Surgery Program toward an independent level of practice.

This program is geared toward physicians aiming to practice general surgery in smaller communities, rural settings, or resource-challenged locations.
