The Oregon Chapter of the American College of Surgeons has been a proud ACS chapter since 1965. The Chapter Council is made up of dedicated surgeons from around the state of Oregon, with council representation that is diverse geographically, across surgical disciplines, and includes seasoned veterans and a younger generation of surgeons. The office of President rotates geographically, so the Chapter maintains representation from Oregon Health and Sciences University, the Portland metro area and other areas of the state. Regional Council positions represent the Metro area, Willamette Valley, Central/Eastern Oregon, Columbia Gorge, North Coast, McKenzie (Eugene) and Southern Oregon. The Oregon chapter has three standing Committees: The Programs Committee which coordinates the Oregon-Washington summer conference, a Trauma Committee and a Cancer Committee. Oregon has endorsed the Oregon NSQIP Collaborative and has held a “Day at the Capitol” advocacy event each year for the past three years. Funds from the Oregon Chapter Foundation are used to support Oregon ACS programs and charitable endeavors, including the Baker-Moseley Resident Paper Competition, Lectures at the annual meeting on underserved populations, a Young Surgeon's Leadership Conference, Rural Surgery Residency Programs and other community service projects.
For the past decade, Oregon ACS has held its chapter meeting during even numbered years at Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon, and for the last few years the Oregon Chapter has partnered with the ACS Washington Chapter on this event. The annual meeting is held in the state of Washington during odd numbered years. This joint scientific program also draws an audience from states neighboring both Washington and Oregon. Since 2012, Oregon ACS has taken over an administrative role with the Portland Surgical Society, founded in 1948. The society is an important educational forum for surgeons as well as a showcase for the achievements of many trainees, offering an opportunity to renew camaraderie and a unique sense of fellowship.
