Partner and Volunteer Spotlight

Partner: Dr. Victor Mapulanga

Dr. Victor Mapulanga is the academic head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Zambia and University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka, Zambia. A urologist by training, Dr. Mapulanga has played a key role in developing activities at the ACS-Lusaka Surgical Training Collaborative, especially in transplant surgery. His support in allocating resources, leading meetings, and ensuring our volunteers have a productive and meaningful experience has contributed to the significant growth in the partnership over the past year.

We were fortunate to have Dr. Mapulanga attend our workplan meeting in April and Clinical Congress in October where he presented on partnership progress, advised on strategic direction, and engaged with several current and future volunteers. Dr. Mapulanga’s leadership will continue to develop the partnership and positively impact his trainees and patients.

Volunteer: Laura Fischer, MD, MS, FACS

Dr. Fischer, of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program at The University of Oklahoma (OU) in Norman, continues to make significant strides in advancing global surgical education through her work with ACS H.O.P.E. Her recent visit to UTH in Lusaka, Zambia, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing Lusaka Surgical Training Collaborative.

In September 2024, Dr. Fischer engaged OU simulation specialist Michael McGrail and spent 3 weeks renovating and equipping the new surgical simulation center at UTH. This initiative, supported by an estimated $5,000 in donated materials, will increase surgical training capabilities not just for Lusaka but for the region. Dr. Fischer's expertise in advanced GI, minimally invasive, and bariatric surgery proved invaluable as she conducted comprehensive training sessions in laparoscopic techniques and minimally invasive procedures.
