The ACS H.O.P.E. team works collectively with Hurricane Maria Assistance Relief & Institutional Alliance, Inc. (HMARIA, Inc.) to support its mission to aid persons who are victims of natural disasters and provide critical support and resources to the minority and underrepresented populations in Puerto Rico. Volunteer students from John Jay College and the University of Puerto Rico work alongside local community-based organizations and volunteers who work diligently to serve the local communities. ACS H.O.P.E. works with HMARIA, Inc. to offer experiential learning opportunities for surgical residents, medical students, and premed students. ACS H.O.P.E. volunteers give virtual guest lectures at local medical schools and participate in the mentoring program designed to match a student or resident with an ACS surgeon for research support, career planning, and more.
