As a society, we are continuously striving to further our goals through the work of our executive council and committee members.
Mission Statement: Our goal is to increase awareness, identify issues of diversity and inclusion within the military healthcare system, and foster a climate to allow free exchange of ideas in patient care, collegial interactions, and leadership within the military surgical community. Our vision: Every surgeon, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, will feel included within the ESS.
In 2019, the Finance Committee was re-named the Membership Committee in recognition of the close relationship between the financial wellbeing of the organization and our ability to serve our members’ needs. The committee provides financial oversight and stewardship of the legacy funds from both the Wratten Society and the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons.
The Mentorship Committee provides resources for the education, residency, professional development, and CME needs of military surgeons. The committee has focused on building and expanding our network of military surgical providers as well as providing mentorship throughout their careers.
The Outreach Committee showcases the achievements of military surgeons, expands fellowship, and highlights opportunities for military surgeons across academic societies through multiple platforms.
The program committee plans the full-day Excelsior Surgical Society Symposium held in conjunction with the ACS Clinical Congress. This scholarly forum will provide continuing education credit and is attended by military and civilian surgeons, residents and medical students. The Symposium provides the opportunity for exchange of information and networking opportunities between military tri-service (Army, Navy, and Air Force) and civilian colleagues related to optimization of wartime and peacetime care of military and civilian personnel. During the Clinical Congress, the Program Committee also organizes the Pryor Lecture, Churchill Lecture, as well as the Excelsior Surgical Society Reception.
The Research Committee moderates the Region 13 ACS Committee on Trauma (COT) paper competition as well as a military-specific session during the Scientific Forum portion of the Clinical Congress.
