Association of Women in Surgery: Resident and Fellows Committee
The AWS Resident and Fellow Committee is focused on addressing surgical trainee programs and issues, with an emphasis on engaging residents and fellows in the AWS at an early stage in their careers. Committee members work closely with many of the other additional AWS committees, with a significant level of interaction with the Medical Student Committee.
Requirements:
- Prior work with AWS
- Current member of AWS or willing to become a member
- Willingness to attend all AWS Council meetings (two in-person and two conference calls) and the AWS Annual Conference sessions
- Willingness to participate in AWS initiatives that align with the organization’s mission and strategic objectives, including programmatic development that benefits women trainees
Resident Advisor to the American Board of Surgery Research Committee (3 positions open)
Vascular Surgery applicants and at-large General Surgery applicants are encouraged to apply
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) seeks three residents who will act as advisors to the ABS Research Committee. The Research Committee will seek input from the resident advisors for decisions involving trainees, including what types of research would help improve resident training, appropriate topic selection, feasibility, and scope of resident surveys after the annual ABS In-Training Examination (ABSITE) and/or Vascular Surgery In-Training Examination (VSITE).
The resident advisors are expected to attend at least one ABS Research Committee meeting each year that is specifically designated to discuss any potential survey associated with the ABSITE. They are also encouraged to attend other meetings of the ABS Research Committee where their input would be welcome but attendance at these meetings is not a requirement.
The three residents will hold staggered 3-year terms such that one member of the group will rotate off each year. To facilitate this, the initial appointments will be as follows and the residents will come from the following groups:
- A General Surgery resident selected and nominated by the Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons (initial 1-year term)
- A resident in a Vascular Surgery training program (initial 2-year term)
- An at-large General Surgery resident selected after a call for nominations (initial 3-year term)
ACS Committees Open Positions
DROPC: Perioperative Care
The Committee on Perioperative Care (CPC) assumes a leading role in the development of programs related to perioperative care and the operating room environment, encourages and provides expertise for the development of measurement tools to define and disseminate the best practices of perioperative care, and monitors state and federal activities as well as industry developments affecting the care of the surgical patient.
Committee on Ethics
Provide the Board of Regents with a means for deliberation and preparation of ethical issues which the American College of Surgeons may address.
Legislative Committee
The Legislative Committee is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and recommending positions on federal legislation and policy issues that come before the U.S. Congress and state capitols with the potential to affect the needs, interests, and roles of surgeons and surgical patients. Previous experience with health care policy development, legislative experience, and/or SurgeonsVoice and SurgeonsPAC preferred.
Committee on Medical Student Education
The Committee on Medical Student Education committee aims to comprehensively address the educational needs in surgery for medical students during all four years of medical school.
Committee on Resident Education
To address issues of resident education in surgery, including the educational environment, characteristics of the resident population, graduate surgical education curricular issues and competency, and faculty development as educators.
ACS Board of Governors Workgroups
Best Practices
Create and disseminate guidelines developed from well-accepted, peer-reviewed best practices on topics relevant to the surgical community and the patients we serve.
Chapter Activities Domestic
To serve as an advocate for College Chapters within the United States and Canada. The workgroup will assist Chapters in implementing and promoting College programs in an effort to carry out the College mission at the loco-regional level.
Chapter Activities International
To serve as an advocate for all of the College's International Chapters, and monitor and report on the International Chapters' activities, resources, and issues.
Health Policy & Advocacy
To identify public policy issues and concerns affecting surgeons and our patients and identify those on which the College should focus its attention and resources. In addition, the workgroup develops action plans to address issues, expand and monitor mechanisms by which the College makes surgeons, patients, and the public aware of our health policies and agendas, and develops and maintains mechanisms by which legislative and regulatory issues can be addressed in a timely and effective manner.
Communications and Outreach
To support communication between the Fellows and the Governors, whether specialty society or chapter, and from the Governors to the Regents of the College, as well as formulate consistent communication efforts targeting the Fellows and other surgeons and the public, policymakers, and the media where appropriate. This workgroup also published the quarterly The Cutting Edge: News and Notes from the Board of Governors.
Patient Education
To identify areas of need and advocate for the education of surgical patients to improve the quality of care. Works closely with the ACS Patient Education Committee.
Surgical Care and Delivery
To provide the American College of Surgeons with information regarding the important issues that affect the delivery of surgical care in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers, and to develop and support programs that will improve the care of surgical patients.
Surgical Training
To identify areas of need and advocate for the ongoing quality education, professional development, and just-in-time products for medical students, surgeons in training, and practicing surgeons.
Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Awards
The ACS Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Awards recognize and celebrate ACS Fellows and members whose altruism, vision, leadership, and dedication provide models to emulate and whose contributions have made a lasting difference. The responsibility of this workgroup is to review applications and the process for the ACS Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Awards and propose the final award winners.
Survey
To support the communication of important matters to the Chair of the Board of Governors and other College leaders through the completion of an annual survey by the Board of Governors, and to review the annual survey tool, assess the content and scope of questions, propose appropriate and timely changes, and analyze the results.
