More about Jo Buyske
Jo Buyske, MD, is Executive Director of the American Board of Surgery. Her major initiatives include improvement of assessment and education of surgeons; standards in training; and flexible pathways in training and beyond, as well as international relationships in surgery.
Dr. Buyske was chief of surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for 10 years, where her clinical practice and research focused on minimally invasive surgery especially foregut surgery. She continues at Penn on the emergency surgical service. She also volunteers as a surgeon several weeks a year in resource-limited countries, most recently Nepal and Haiti, where she has been instrumental in developing a new surgical training program.
Dr. Buyske is a past-president of SAGES, has won numerous mentoring awards, been named as a Top Doc in Philadelphia and nationally, and has been featured in a Lifetime documentary on women doctors. She has given well over 100 invited lectures, and has published extensively.
More about David Spain
David Spain, MD, FACS, grew up in Michigan and attended medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. Following his general surgery at UMNDJ-Robert Wood Johnson, he pursued additional training in trauma, burns, and surgical critical care at the University of Louisville. After that, he joined the faculty at Louisville where he spent his formative years.
Dr. Spain came to Stanford University in 2001 as professor of surgery, chief of trauma/critical care surgery, and as the trauma medical director at Stanford Healthcare. In 2011, he became an endowed professor as the inaugural David L. Gregg, MD Professor and Chief of Acute Care Surgery. He has an active surgical practice in elective and emergency general surgery as well as trauma and surgical critical care. His research interests have been in the field of trauma/surgical critical care, introduction and assessment of new technology in patient care and the assessment of trauma system performance. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 25 book chapters. He has R-01 funding from the NIMHHD for the project “Development of a Risk Factor Screen for Mental Health Problems after Sudden Illness or Injury.”
Dr. Spain is a director for the American Board of Surgery. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Trauma Acute Care Surg, Surgery and PLoS One, as well as Scientific American’s Surgery and Critical Care of the Surgical Patient and the Merck Manual. He is currently the president-elect of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST).
