This webinar focuses on a current analysis of resident psychological well-being including the etiologies, prevalence, and consequences of burnout amongst trainees, and reviews institutional and personal strategies for overcoming the same, including a review of key elements of personal resilience.

- Attendees will be able to describe some of factors undermining physician wellbeing in current environment
- Attendee will be able to describe current programmatic strategies to address these challenges

More about John Mellinger
John D. Mellinger, MD, FACS, serves as the J. Roland Folse Endowed Chair in Surgery, vice chair of the department of surgery, and professor and chair of general surgery at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine in Springfield. Dr. Mellinger received his MD from Case Western Reserve University. He completed residency training in general surgery at the Blodgett/St. Mary’s Hospitals program in Grand Rapids, MI, followed by a fellowship in surgical endoscopy at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Cleveland, OH.
He has also completed a Surgical Education Research Fellowship through the Association for Surgical Education. He served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force, and prior to coming to SIU has had academic appointments at Wright State University, Michigan State University, and the Medical College of Georgia. His academic interests include surgical education, surgical endoscopy, gastrointestinal surgery, and international surgery.
Dr. Mellinger serves on the boards of several national organizations, including serving as a director on the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Family Medicine, the Board of Governors of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Board of Trustees of the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA). He is a past president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, and has previously served as Academic Dean for the Commission on Medical and Dental Education of the CMDA. Dr. Mellinger has received more than 30 teaching awards, including the Outstanding Teacher Award of the Association for Surgical Education, and the Educator of the Year Award of the CMDA. Dr. Mellinger is married to his wife of 34 years, Elaine, and has four children and eight grandchildren.
