What Are You Worth? Creating and Claiming Value to Optimize Negotiations

On July 29, 2021, the Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons (RAS-ACS) hosted a webinar presented by Barbara J. Pettitt, MD, FACS, FAAP.

The discussion focused on preparation for job negotiations, including determining job and life priorities, determining what you will need to be successful, strategies for determining what you are worth and common mistakes made in the negotiation process.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, viewers should be able to:

  • Describe at least five personal priorities important in their own job search.
  • Describe at least three resources other than compensation that will be important to their success.
  • List at least three possible resources for help in determining if a job offer is right for them, and in negotiating the terms of their employment.

More About Barbara J. Pettitt

Barbara J. Pettitt, MD, FACS, FAAP, is a pediatric surgeon who has served as the Director of Medical Student Education for Emory’s Department of Surgery for twenty years. She coordinates, manages, and presents a wide array of didactic courses and skills labs to medical students, surgical residents and other trainees. She has enhanced the scope of Emory surgical trainees' learning experiences by spearheading the development of electronic teaching sites and directing the annual incoming Intern Bootcamp and a one-month intern prep course for M4s going into surgery internships. She is the director of the M4 Applicant Prep Program, which provides guidance to M4 surgery applicants through all phases of the residency application process, including help with personal statements, strategies for creating senior schedules and application and Match lists, and mock interviews. She is also the M3 Clerkship Director and directs the M4 Elective and Visiting Student programs. She has developed modules for the American College of Surgeons/Association of Surgical Education's Medical Student Simulation-Based Surgical Skills Curriculum and the American College of Surgeons/Association of Program Directors in Surgery’s National Intern Prep Curriculum, and is on the task force which created and overseas the conduct of the annual ACS Entering Resident Readiness Assessment (ERRA).
