New RISE Article Describes the Challenges of the Internship Residency Year

April 25, 2023

A new article is available on the ACS Resources in Surgical Education (RISE) webpage, “What Does It Mean to Be a ‘Good Intern?,’” by Deanna L. Palenzuela, MD.

With no standardized curriculum or set expectations to guide general surgery residents through their intern year, the transition from medical student to intern can be particularly challenging. This article, intended for surgical resident trainees and individuals involved in surgical education, outlines current expectations of new interns based on national standards for senior medical students entering general surgery residency, while highlighting the limited literature and guidance that currently exists going forward from the interns’ first day.

Do you have an idea for an article that you would like to feature on the RISE webpage? Submit your idea today by clicking the Submit Your Article, Idea, or Topic link.
