Monica Bertagnolli, MD, FACS, to Be Appointed NCI Director

Last week, President Biden officially announced his intent to nominate Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, FACS, a renowned oncologic surgeon and cancer researcher from Boston, MA, as the 16th Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  She will be the first woman to lead the agency, as well as the first ACS Fellow. The ACS Brief previously published an article discussing Dr. Bertagnolli’s imminent appointment.

Currently the Richard E. Wilson professor of surgery in surgical oncology at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Bertagnolli practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is a member of the Sarcoma Disease Centers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She has been a leader in the field of the genetic understanding of gastrointestinal cancer development and has led collaborative initiatives that have transformed clinical cancer research.

The College congratulates Dr. Bertagnolli on her upcoming appointment and looks forward to continuing working with the NCI to transform cancer care in the US.
