The annual ACS Clinical Congress is anchored an outstanding academic and scientific education program, and this year’s conference offered more than 100 expert-led Panel Sessions to share the latest in surgical education. More than 80 of those Panel Sessions were in the General Surgery Track and covered a broad spectrum of topics that can help general surgeon keep up on key skills and information.
These Panel Sessions remain available online through the Clinical Congress 2022 on-demand platform, which is open to all in-person and virtual attendees, as well as new registrants until May 1, 2023. Check out some of these general surgery sessions from Clinical Congress 2022.
This panel discussion explores both the biologic and socioeconomic reasons for disparities in breast cancer survival. Tumor subtype, stage of presentation, and access to care play a role in breast cancer disparity. Advances in screening and treatment are not equally shared among all patients, and several minority groups and special population patients face individual challenges. Disparities exist along the continuum of care, from screening rates to treatment delays caused by both systemic and patient-related factors. The discussion, moderated by Kathie-Ann P. Joseph, MD, FACS, and Angelena Crown, MD, provides an understanding of where research and outreach efforts are needed to mitigate the disparity gap.
Robotic surgery is here to stay. Most residents are learning how to use the robot during their residencies, and many rural hospitals have purchased robots and have thriving programs. Other rural hospitals are contemplating adding robotics both to compete in the marketplace and attract surgeons. This Panel Session, moderated by Benjamin T. Jarman, MD, FACS, and Jill S. Ties, MD, FACS, describes successful programs and explore the feasibility of a successful robotics program in rural hospitals.
Appendicitis is one of the most common acute disease processes which general surgeons face. While simple appendicitis is typically dealt with operatively, the management of those things which complicate a simple appendicitis presentation can be challenging. This session, moderated by Randall S. Zuckerman, MD, FACS, and Deepa Magge, MD, FACS, describes and reviews what complicates the diagnosis and treatment of simple acute appendicitis. Specifically, panelists review appendiceal perforation and abscess and how best to address the complicated appendix, as well as provide a review of tumors of the appendix.
