December 5, 2023

Today’s medical environment is challenging, complex, and unpredictable, and with the demands on leaders escalating, the need for leadership has never been greater. To meet this need, the ACS offers the Surgeons as Leaders: From Operating Room to Boardroom course, which is intended for surgeons in any practice setting (academic or community) who currently serve in leadership positions or aspire to such positions. The next ACS Surgeons as Leaders course will take place March 24–27, 2024, in Durham, North Carolina. Applications to participate are due Friday, December 15, 2023.

The course has been redesigned for 2024. It will feature interactive talks, breakout sessions, small group exercises with case-based scenarios, and working lunches to review principles and practice of leadership. The 3-day course will cover topics such as:

  • How to evaluate a job opportunity and negotiate a new job offer
  • How to recruit and retain surgeons
  • How to start a new clinical program
  • How to affect a culture change
  • How to manage difficult personalities
  • Conflict management
  • Building and maintaining effective teams
  • Financial aspects of leading

The course will also offer academic practice and community practice tracks to meet the needs of surgeons working in these settings.

Attendees will have can receive an individualized 1:1 coaching session with one of 10 participating faculty members, who include current and former ACS Executives, Regents, Presidents, and more. In addition, attendees will be able to network with other participants and with faculty members to establish long-term relationships.

The course is limited to 64 participants and the deadline to apply is approaching, so don’t delay.
