The JPIA was established to recognize outstanding surgeons who are engaging in research, advancing the art and science of surgery, and demonstrating early promise of significant contribution to the practice of surgery and the safety of surgical patients. The award is supported through a generous endowed fund established by the donors and administered by the ACS Surgical Research Committee.
Last year’s awardee was Idelberto Raul Badell, MD, from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Badell’s research focused on transplantation immunology and clinical kidney transplantation. His basic science laboratory investigates the role of T cells in the development of human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) that negatively impact kidney transplant survival, and his clinical trial work is concentrates on optimization of costimulation blockade-based immunosuppressive strategies to improve kidney transplant outcomes.
Dr. Badell’s work in transplantation has been recognized through continuous funding, regular research publication, and several awards from research organizations.
