Special Sessions on timely topics of interest to ACS members have become a foundational element of Clinical Congress in recent meetings, and this year offered three impactful panels.
Unlike the period of structured surgical training, practicing surgeons must participate in self-directed and self-regulated learning based primarily on their own efforts. They need to assess the appropriate time for acquiring new surgical skills, seek out effective education and training programs to acquire the new skills, and safely transfer the new skills to surgical practice. This session of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators® shares the perspective of experts in this domain.
Surgeons as Leaders: An update on Firearm Injury Prevention
Injuries and deaths from firearm-related violence continue to be an epidemic in the US, with surgeons on the frontlines of both emergency treatment and injury prevention efforts. Unfortunately, this is also an area that is marked by increasingly contentious and hostile sociopolitical debate. This session features several national leaders in this area who facilitated an open discussion on past, current, and future plans and programs for addressing this crisis and making progress in reducing the preventable morbidity and mortality related to firearm violence.
The Power of Quality: Bringing ACS Quality Programs to Every Hospital and Patient in America
Quality has been the cornerstone of the ACS since its founding, and through its Power of Quality Campaign, the ACS is on a mission to improve surgical quality and patient care across the country through its Quality Programs. This Special Session provides surgeons with essential information about how they can start or grow quality programs in their hospitals, how they can become more effective champions of surgical quality and how the ACS will assist their hospitals in promoting their participation in quality programs.
