New RISE Article Details How Surgeon Educators and Trainees Can Lead the Way in Sustainable Surgery

January 16, 2024

A new Resources in Surgical Education (RISE) article is available to read online. “Sustainable Surgery—A Call to Action,” by Madeline Matthys, Tejas S. Sathe, MD; Jaeyun Jane Wang, MD; Ava Yap, MD, MHS; Seema Gandhi, MD; Adnan Alseidi, MD, EdM, FACS, examines the intersection between healthcare and climate change and how greenhouse gas emissions in medicine contribute to the growing global issue.

The article illustrates the importance of addressing sustainability in healthcare and the operating room, as well as assesses and identifies actionable goals at an individual, departmental, and institutional level to address healthcare emissions.

The piece also shows how changes implemented by individual surgeons, residents, or even medical students can spark a movement towards sustainable surgical practices at the departmental and institutional levels.
