July 26, 2022

Medical students with an interest in surgery, take note: the ACS National Tutorial Seminars for Medical Students offer online video tutorial seminars are based on the content of the ACS/Association for Surgical Education Medical Student Core Curriculum and conducted by expert faculty in various surgical specialties—and they are all available for free. These video presentations highlight the foundational principles of surgery and are targeted to students in their core surgical clerkships.

The nearly 20 tutorial seminars available on the ACS website cover topics including:

  • Fluids/Electrolytes
  • Perioperative Care
  • Postoperative Care
  • Trauma I: Initial Trauma Evaluation
  • Abdominal Wall/Groin Masses
  • Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage
  • Breast
  • Endocrine

These video presentations have value for surgical educators, as well. According to Tyler Hughes, MD, FACS, clinical professor of surgery and director of medical education, Kansas University School of Medicine, Salina, and ACS Secretary, “During my preparation for our third-year clerkship for surgery, I found the Tutorial Seminar on Acid/Base Balance to be very well done, and I incorporated the link into this session in my lecture on this subject. It’s a great asset for students when they need a well-done video presentation on an aspect of surgical care.”
