Caregiving for a dependent loved one is an emotional task, and caregivers may struggle with negative feelings as they navigate this role. In this demanding role, you may experience ambivalence, anger, anxiety, irritability, depression, embarrassment, fear, grief, guilt, lack of appreciation, loneliness, and resentment. Taking care of your well-being, navigating these emotions, and meeting your needs is one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver, and the challenge is even more pronounced for surgeons who already have intense, demanding careers.
To illuminate some of these challenges, the ACS Surgeon Well-being Program is hosting a webinar on Wednesday, June 22, 4:00−5:00 pm CT. Surgeon as Caregivers--The Triple Threat: Caring for Yourself while Caring for a Loved One while Caring for Patients will feature surgeons sharing their experience with navigating their surgical career, well-being, and being a caregiver. Discussion topics will range from lessons learned to boundaries, compassion, empathy, the influence of being a surgeon caregiver, career trajectory, and more.
Melissa Red Hoffman, MD, FACS, and ACS Governor Rohan Jerayajah, MD, FACS, will share their experiences and perspectives as surgeons and caregivers in this online seminar. Carla Haack, MD, FACS, will moderate.
