Navy Commander Highlights the History of Women Surgeons at Sea

Women have been providing surgical care aboard seagoing vessels for centuries. A new episode of The Operative Word podcast takes a look at the history and evolution of women surgeons at sea and offers current examples of women who lead warship surgical teams. Host Dr. Lillian Erdahl interviews Commander Dr. Amy Hernandez, from the Naval Medical Center San Diego in California and lead author of the article, “Anchors Aweigh! The History of Women Surgeons at Sea,” which is available as an article in press from the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
