The transition back to an in-person meeting was full of energy in New Orleans, as the ACS Louisiana Chapter convened March 18−20 for its 70th annual meeting. A highlight of the event was a reunion of Chapter Past-Presidents (see photo) and impressive research presentations from medical students and residents.
The Louisiana Chapter has evolved over its history to better represent the unique and multicultural communities in the state. Ellis Arjmand, MD, FACS, gave an overview of the historical segregation in the US healthcare system, including hospitals in New Orleans that served the Black community. Deiadra Garrett, MD, PhD, FACS, wove her personal story as the eighth Black woman pediatric surgeon trained in the US.
Trainees expertly delivered 36 podium presentations and 30 poster presentations.
The chapter welcomed ACSS President Julie Freischlag, MD, FACS, DFSVS, who delivered a wonderful overview of enhanced postoperative recovery and the value of ACS membership. Following her presentation was a lively Surgical Jeopardy competition, with Louisiana State University (LSU) New Orleans defending its title with a commanding win over Tulane University, Ochsner Clinic, and LSU Shreveport.
