Apply for the ACS Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS, Traveling Mentorship Fellowship

May 31, 2022

Mentorship is a hallmark of academic and professional success, and the colleagues and friends of Dr. Gerald B. Healy have established funding for an annual mentoring fellowship program in his honor. This program is intended to help young surgeons develop innovative ideas, innovative approaches, and well-informed attitudes about safety, quality, and professionalism via visits with successful mentors.

The Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS, Traveling Mentorship Fellowship should be used to facilitate visiting and engaging with at least one successful mentor. The traveling fellow will use the award, in the amount of $5,000, to cover travel and other expenses incurred.

Applicants must be US or Canadian ACS Fellows or Associate Fellows no higher than the rank of associate professor, and mentors must be US or Canadian Fellows or, if in a non-surgical field (for example, microbiology, anatomy) or non-medical field (such as, business, law), must be appropriate for the research and education needs of the applicant.

The recipient should provide:

  • Report/s for submission to the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons detailing their experience, lessons learned, and preserving such thoughts of the week for future generations of surgeons to learn from.
  • A financial report at the end of the award period. The traveling fellow may use the funds to subsidize travel and per diem for mentor visits or replace lost revenue from clinical duties. The latter purpose is taxable.
