In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the College is highlighting its mental health and well-being resources to support surgeons.
An individual’s mental health is vulnerable to a variety of drivers and factors, with some being out of your control. The nature of the surgical profession provides increased exposure to elements that can influence a surgeon’s professional and personal lives, leading to comorbidities, including second victim syndrome, moral injury, compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Creating safe, trusted environments and encouraging conversation about well-being and mental health is necessary to reduce the stigma of mental health.
Creating Culture in the Workplace – The White Board and Professional Time Out
This week, you are encouraged to watch a video interview wherein Mary Brandt, MD, MDiv, FACS, discusses The White Board and The Professional Time Out (PTO) concepts with Susan Mackinnon, MD, FACS. The White Board and The PTO, developed and researched by Dr. Mackinnon, are practical tools, especially useful for multidisciplinary teams. They seek to foster workplace professionalism, behavior, culture, and well-being by creating a safe and trusting environment for team members to deliver the highest level of patient care.
