Dr. Mark Malangoni Will Receive College’s Top Honor

The ACS recently announced that it will present its Distinguished Service Award (DSA)—the College’s highest honor—to Mark A. Malangoni, MD, FACS, a recently retired general surgeon from Lyndhurst, OH. Dr. Malangoni will be honored on Sunday, October 16, during Convocation at Clinical Congress 2022 in San Diego, CA.

“I consider this award to be the greatest honor of my career,” said Dr. Malangoni. “It is humbling to join the previous award recipients, all of whom have been inspirational to me.”

The DSA recognizes Dr. Malangoni’s “various membership roles with the Young Surgeons, the Board of Governors, the Committee on Trauma, the Advisory Council for General Surgery, and the Board of Regents as well as his foresight in recognizing future issues that would impact maintenance of certification and surgical training in general surgery,” according to the award citation.

An ACS Fellow since 1983, Dr. Malangoni has served on the ACS Board of Regents, chaired both the ACS Board of Governors and Advisory Council for General Surgery, and has served on multiple other committees of the College. Dr. Malangoni has been a leader in several other surgery organizations, including acting as a senior director and past chair of the American Board of Surgery (ABS), as well as the associate executive director of the ABS.
