Integrate Suicide Awareness and Prevention Strategies into Your Practice

September 19, 2023

Whether you are experiencing feelings of suicide or are worried about another, there is help available. If you think someone needs help or you are in a crisis, don’t wait:

  • Call or text: 988
  • Chat at org
  • Call the Physician Support Line at (888) 409-0141

Increasing knowledge and spreading awareness about physician suicide is an important goal for the ACS during September—National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—and year-round. The College can help you integrating suicide awareness and prevention strategies and resources into your practice. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a free mobile app for providers to incorporate suicide prevention strategies into their practice and address suicide risk.

The Suicide Safe app is based on SAMHSA's Suicide Assessment Five-Step Evaluation and Triage (SAFE-T) card.

With Suicide Safe, healthcare providers can:

  • Learn how to use the SAFE-T approach
  • Explore interactive sample case studies and see SAFE-T in action through case scenarios and tips.
  • Quickly access and share information, including crisis lines, fact sheets, educational opportunities, and treatment resources
  • Browse conversation starters that provide sample language and tips for talking with others who may need suicide intervention
  • Locate treatment options, filter by type and distance, and share locations and resources to provide timely referrals for patients
