Bob Basu, MD, MPH, FACS, in July was named one of the top breast augmentation surgeons in the nation in a report from Newsweek. The report, which is intended to recognize exemplary plastic surgeons and provide patients with the information they need to make their best health care choices, was compiled using surveys of fellow plastic surgeons throughout the U.S. Dr. Basu, who practices in Houston, TX, is an author of the internationally renowned textbook Cosmetic Breast Surgery and is recognized as a thought leader in aesthetic breast surgery. His practice is ranked in the top 1 percent of breast implant practices in the nation. Dr. Basu also serves as vice-president of finance for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Basu is known for his endeavors in patient education, including hosting the podcast, Behind the Double Doors, in which he answers patients’ lesser-discussed questions. He also makes frequent media appearances, discussing topics such as reconstructive surgery after cancer.

Jay M. MacGregor, MD, FACS, deputy chief of staff, Veterans Affairs (VA) Eastern Colorado (Denver) Healthcare System, and President, American College of Surgeons (ACS) North Dakota Chapter, in May was named a 2021 Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Fellow in Leadership, which recognizes and supports the development of outstanding mid-career physicians aspiring to be future leaders.

The goals of AOA, a medical honor society founded in 1902, are to recognize high educational achievement, honor gifted teaching, encourage the development of leaders in academia and the community, support the ideals of humanism, and promote service to others.

Dr. MacGregor was elected an AOA Fellow in Leadership for his experience in leadership, including with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), where he completed a yearlong detail as the acting chief surgical consult in the Midwest Healthcare Network. He serves as a member of the VHA rural and ambulatory care surgery advisory board. Dr. MacGregor, the first VA physician selected as an AOA Fellow in Leadership, also credits his participation in ACS leadership roles as significantly contributing to his selection for this honor.

Valerie Sheridan, DO, FACS, FACOS, DFACOS, in July began a new role as dean of the A.T. Still University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-SOMA), Mesa, AZ. Before taking on her new position, Dr. Sheridan served as ATSU-SOMA assistant dean of clinical education, assessment/outcomes, and graduate medical education.

Dr. Sheridan has completed numerous postgraduate certifications in multiple leadership programs, including two yearlong programs at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Health Policy Fellowship and the Costin Institute for Osteopathic Medical Educators.

Dr. Sheridan is active in several professional organizations. A Fellow of the ACS since 2012, she serves as an American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) representative to the College. Dr. Sheridan also has been a leader in several osteopathic medicine organizations, including serving as president of the ACOS in 2014–2015, where she recently was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Sheridan is vice-chair of the Osteopathic Recognition Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and has served as a member of American Osteopathic Association committees, including the Bureau of Graduate Medical Education and Bureau of Federal Health Policy.
