Feeding Tube Home Skills Set Available for Patients

August 10, 2023

The ACS Surgical Patient Education Feeding Tube Home Skills Kit provides patients with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their feeding tube care at home. The kit is a simulation-based, multimedia program that supports self-paced learning and sage management following discharge. Each skills kit contains:

  • Practice equipment
  • DVD with skill demonstration
  • Instruction booklet with images
  • Discharge guidelines
  • References for additional support
  • Step-by-step checklist to guide performance
  • Evaluation of skill acquisition

The ESPEN guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients recommend enteral feeding for cancer patients with inadequate nutrition when counseling and oral supplements have not been successful. The skills kit was developed by the ACS with input from the American Pediatric Surgical Association, American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the Commission on Cancer (CoC), and the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society.

Skills kits should be eligible for reimbursement with flexible spending, health savings, and health reimbursement accounts. ACS member pricing is available.
