November 30, 2023

William Burns, MD, FACS, has been named the new chair of the Cancer Surgery Standards Program (CSSP) Surgical Information Transformation Committee (SITC). Dr. Burns is an assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Burns has been an active member of the CSSP and has served as SITC Vice-Chair since its inception in 2020.

The CSSP expresses gratitude to Tina Hieken, MD, FACS, for her years of service as the SITC Chair and wishes her well in her new role as Vice-Chair of the CSSP.

With Dr. Burns’ promotion to chair, the CSSP is seeking applications for the SITC Vice-Chair position. The Vice-Chair will serve a 2-year term with privilege of reappointment to a second 2-year term.

The SITC provides guidance on the collection of essential data elements for cancer surgery by developing synoptic operative report templates and cancer surgery protocols.

Individuals interested in the position should submit their curriculum vitae and a brief statement of interest explaining how they could contribute to this role to cssp@facs.org by December 7.
