CoC Announces 2022 Paper Competition Winners

The CoC announced the winners of the annual Cancer Research Paper Competition at its Plenary Session at Clinical Congress 2022 in San Diego, CA.

Judging in the Clinical Research category was based on originality, scientific merit, and clinical relevance to clinical oncology and the mission of the CoC.

  • First place: Peter L. Zhan, MD, “Association Between Metastatic Pattern and Prognosis in Stage IV Gastric Cancer: Potential for Stage Classification Reform”
  • Second place: Sarah Azari, MD, “Utilizing Prostate Specific Antigen Density to Risk Stratify Equivocal Lesions on Multiparametric MRI During Prostate Cancer Screening Evaluation ”
  • Third place: Alexander Frey, MD, “Immunotherapy Utilization in Stage IIIA Melanoma: Less Can Be More.”
  • Honorable mentions: Naveen Manisundaram, MD, “Circumferential Resection Margin in Rectal Cancer Surgery – How Well Are We Reporting This New Quality Measure?” and Hamza Khan, MD, “Disparities in Receipt of Guideline-Concordant Therapy in Foregut Cancers. An Analysis of the National Cancer Database”

Judging in the Basic Science category was based on originality, scientific method, technical complexity, and the potential for research to be translated into medical practice.

  • First place: Omair Shariq, MBBS, MS, “The Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal Domain (BET) Protein Inhibitor: I-BET151 Shows Preclinical Efficacy in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors via Modulation of mTOR Signaling”
  • Second place: Megan Harper, MS, MD, PhD, “Unique Somatic Mutation Genotype Profile in Kentucky Patients with Colon Adenocarcinoma”
  • Third place: Naresh Sah, PharmD, “Upregulated Lymphoblastic Leukemia-Derived Sequence-1 Promotes the Progression and Metastasis of Ovarian Cancer”

 

The annual Cancer Research Paper Competition is a collaborative activity that includes the CoC and the American Cancer Society and is open to all residents and fellows in training. The 2023 competition will open in January. More information is available on the CoC website.
