Fellowships

Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS, Traveling Mentorship Fellowship

The colleagues and friends of Dr. Gerald B. Healy have established funding for an annual mentoring fellowship program in his honor.

Mentorship is one of the hallmarks of academic and professional success. This program is intended to help young surgeons develop new ideas, innovative approaches, and well-informed attitudes about safety, quality, and professionalism via visits to successful mentors.

The Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS, Traveling Mentorship Fellowship will be used to facilitate visiting and engaging with one or more successful mentors. The award, in the amount of $5,000, will be used by the traveling fellow to cover travel and per diem costs incurred and subsidize lost revenue from days away from clinical duties.

Applicant Requirements
  • Applicants must be graduates of schools of medicine who have completed their surgical training.
  • Applicants must be U.S./Canadian Fellows or Associate Fellows of the American College of Surgeons no higher than the rank of Associate Professor.
  • Mentors must be U.S./Canadian Fellows of the College or, if in a non-surgical field (for example, microbiology, anatomy) or non-medical field (for example, business, law), must be appropriate for the research and education needs of the applicant.
Responsibility of Awardee
  • The recipient will submit report/s as requested to the College for submission to the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons detailing his or her experience, lessons learned, and preserving such thoughts of the week for future generations of surgeons to read about and learn from.
  • A financial report also will be provided at the end of the award period. The traveling fellow may use the funds to subsidize travel and per diem for mentor visits, or to replace lost revenue from clinical duties. The latter purpose is taxable.

Additional documents and questions are to be directed to the Scholarships Administrator:  scholarships@facs.org or Scholarships Administrator, American College of Surgeons, 633 N. Saint Clair St., Chicago, IL 60611-3295.
