The American College of Surgeons (ACS) in collaboration with Health Care Services Corporation (HCSC), the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), will provide patients undergoing musculoskeletal surgery with comprehensive pain control educational materials to reduce their risk of developing opioid dependency. Together we will distribute safe pain control education programs to patients having non-emergency hip and knee replacement surgeries, or certain forms of spine surgery. CME Courses

All courses listed below will help surgeons meet the MATE act requirements. Surgeons are encouraged to collate and submit all relevant CME certificates as proof of fulfillment.

Implementation and Evaluation of a Safe Pain Control Patient Education Risk Reduction Program

An overview webinar on the multi-collaborative initiative was held on August 23, 2023. Faculty representatives from AAOS and AANS highlighted resources for both professionals and patients to contribute to this collaboration and decrease long-term postsurgical opioid use. Upcoming Courses

In late November 2023, we anticipate launching our Surgical Pain Management in the Setting of Opioid Tolerance and Misuse course which was held at ACS Clinical Congress 2022. A link will be provided when the course is available for CME.

Professional Survey

Sharing your current practices for pain management can help us improve patient outcomes. As part of this multi-association collaboration, we are collecting anonymous data on current clinical practice for pain management. Surgeons are encouraged to take several minutes to complete the survey.

Patient Education Materials

This site set up for the IRB-approved collaboration offers a patient education brochure on safe pain management, a video that highlights talking points from the brochure, as well as a patient survey for feedback. This site is free and open to the public. Patients are encouraged to refer to these materials prior to their pre-op appointment and following their operation.
