Will you have immediate breast reconstruction? If not, you may use an insert to create the shape of a breast under your clothing. This is known as a breast prosthesis or form, which is placed in a bra. They are made from materials like silicone gel, foam, or fiberfill. They move and feel like natural breast tissue. A proper fit can also support good posture.
You will be fitted for a breast prosthesis before use. Fitting is not done until you have healed from your surgery. There are special stores that can help you with a bra and prosthesis. Your doctor can write prescriptions for your prostheses and mastectomy bras. Your insurance may cover breast prostheses. Most policies cover 2 to 4 mastectomy bras with prosthesis pockets. Most will also cover a new prosthesis every 1 to 2 years.
Medicare and Medicaid may pay for some of these expenses. Some breast forms and bras may be tax deductible.20 Contact your health insurance provider to learn more.
Before you are discharged, plan for the type of bra you will wear. There may be support to help pay for supplies after surgery. Ask a social worker or discharge planner to learn more.
