Dr. Martin joined the UVA faculty in 2016, and was promoted to full professor in Spring 2023. She was appointed Chief of Thoracic Surgery in 2020. She served as the Surgery Clerkship Director from 2017 - 2021, and in 2019 became the Associate Program Director for Cardiothoracic Residency. She leads the Thoracic Tumor Board, and co-leads Enhanced Recovery Program for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Martin trained in cardiothoracic surgery at Texas Heart Institute, was the thoracic chief resident at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has been nominated by physician peers as a Top Doctor in Baltimore (2015), Top Doctor in Virginia (2018), and won the Best Practice Award in 2015 for providing excellent, timely access to high quality care with the highest level of patient and referring doctor satisfaction. In 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 she was recognized for achieving 99th percentile for patient satisfaction Press-Ganey scores. She received the Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence at UVA in 2022. Nationally she leads multiple committees for the Alliance for Clinical Trials, and serves as principal investigator of two stage 3 lung cancer trials. She is the STS representative to the Commission on Cancer, served on NCI Gastrointestinal Malignancy Steering Committee from 2019-2023; an Officer of the General Thoracic Surgical Club; and serves on several Workforce Groups in STS. She was elected to the AATS in 2019, serving as Program Chair for the 2023 Annual Meeting. The IASLC appointed her as one of 4 Program Co-Chairs for the World Conference for Lung Cancer in 2024. She has authored more than 60 articles for journals including JCO, Annals of Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and JTCVS. Dr. Martin has been invited to speak at many national and international meetings. She was an editor for the Operative Standards for Cancer Surgery 2nd edition book, associate editor for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and currently an editor for Clinical Lung Cancer.
