Dr. Leitman is a graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine. He received his general surgical training at the New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center and completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at North Shore University Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He has been a career innovator in the areas of general surgery, bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery. As a member of the faculty at North Shore University Hospital, he was appointed Director of Surgical Endoscopy. In 1997, Dr. Leitman moved to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City where he became the Program Director of the Surgical Residency. He joined the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in 2005 where he is presently Program Director of the General Surgery Residency, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chief of General Surgery. In 2007, he was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer and in 2010 Chief of Graduate Medical Education. He is a Professor of Clinical Surgery. In 2008, Dr. Leitman was the recipient of the Murry G. Fischer Distinguished Educator Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology and the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters and published abstracts. He is on the editorial board of 15 surgical journals and is on the Continuing Education Committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
