Biography

Dr. Neumayer is Professor and Chair of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. She previously served as Professor and Chair of Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson and the Margaret and Fenton Maynard Endowed Chair in Breast Cancer Research. During her six-year tenure at the University of Arizona, Dr. Neumayer served in many leadership capacities including Department Chair, Interim Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and Interim Executive Dean. Prior to 2014, she had a more than two-decade tenure at the University of Utah and the Huntsman Cancer Institute where she co-led the breast clinical and research groups. In her clinical practice, she specializes in diseases and surgery of the breast. She is also a recovering trauma/critical care surgeon. Dr. Neumayer is a formally trained clinical trialist and in addition to conducting the world’s largest trial comparing surgical techniques in inguinal hernia repair, she has designed and conducted several window of opportunity and randomized trials for the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Neumayer has over 130 publications and also co-authored a book titled “Meet Virginia: Biography of a Breast” that chronicles a patient’s journey from diagnosis through surgical treatment of her breast cancer. She has held many leadership positions in national organizations, including Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (2018). In her free time, Dr. Neumayer enjoys spending time with her husband of 35 years and their three grown children as well as pursuing her passions as a golfer and professional ball relocator (from one water hazard to the next).
