Dr. Albo is the Chair of Surgery at UTRGV. He specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgical Oncology. Areas of expertise include MIS colon, rectal, liver and pancreatic resections for primary and metastatic tumors. A surgeon’s surgeon, he has been listed for over a decade in the Top Doctors, Top Surgeons, and Top Oncologists lists. He has received numerous awards for clinical service, including the prestigious Michael E. DeBakey Distinguished Clinic Service Medal. He is a co-editor of the seminal Operative Techniques in General Surgery and Operative Techniques in Colorectal Surgery Textbooks. A dedicated educator, he has earned numerous prestigious education awards. Dr. Albo has developed an advanced re-training program that allows for a rapid and safe conversion of open to MIS surgeons. A PhD in Molecular Pathobiology, Dr. Albo has published extensively in Tumor Invasion and Metastasis. He has helped develop the field of Perineural Invasion and Neurogenesis. Dr. Albo is an expert in Health Services Research, specializing in barriers and facilitators for the adoption of MIS concepts in cancer, development of integrated healthcare models in surgery and cancer, healthcare access, and disparities in healthcare. Dr. Albo specializes in the design and implementation of Perioperative Services Matrix Organizations, a model of care that optimizes quality and reduces the cost of care. For over a decade now, he has helped built fully integrated matrix organizations in surgery and cancer in several different types of health systems resulting in marked improvements in quality and efficiencies. A Past-President of the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), he has played a key leadership role in the development of many of the AAS signature programs, including the development of the Academic Surgical Congress (ASC), the Academic Surgery Career Development Course, the Diversity in Academic Surgery, and the Glass Ceiling in Academic Surgery initiatives, among others.
