Douglas Tyler, MD, MSHCT, currently holds the John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston where he is also a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Tyler started this position in October of 2014. He also holds an Adjunct Professor appointment at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Tyler’s previous leadership positions included Division Chief of Surgical Oncology and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center; Chief of the Surgical Services at the Durham VA Medical Center; and within the Duke Cancer Institute he was both Head of the Melanoma program and Associate Director of the Duke Cancer Institute in charge of Strategic Planning. Dr. Tyler’s clinical practice and research interests focuses on GI cancers and melanoma. He has published over 285 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 80 book chapters and is currently the editor of the 22nd edition of the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery. Dr. Tyler was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in 2019. He completed a Masters in Health Care Transformation (MSHCT) at the University of Texas Dell School of Medicine and the McCombs School of Business in 2020. Dr. Tyler is a Senior Director on the American Board of Surgery (ABS) having completed a six-year term as a Director in 2016. He was also Chairman of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board, a component Board of the ABS, from 2014-2016. Dr. Tyler is a past President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, and currently a Governor of the American College of Surgeons as well as President for the Society of Surgical Chairs.
