Paul A. Edwards is the Emeritus Cornelius McCole Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, the flagship of the Henry Ford Health System. He spent 21 years as the Chair of one of the busiest Ophthalmology departments in the Midwest. He guided the department in the development of innovative clinical care, research and teaching programs. Dr. Edwards is a retina specialist, who is also active in basic and clinical research at the hospital. He was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan in 2010 and Michigan state University in 2021. Dr. Edwards received his medical training at the University of the West Indies and following years in General Surgery training, he completed a fellowship at the National Eye Institute and then Ophthalmology residency and fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital. He was appointed to the staff in 1993. Dr. Edwards is noted for many medical publications and his service to many professional organizations. Dr. Edwards is the former chair the Ophthalmology Advisory Council of the American College of Surgeons and is still a member of that council. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. He also past member of the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is member of the board of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (MiSEPS). He is past president of MiSEPS serving from 2020-2022. Dr. Edwards was recently honored with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Achievement Award in 2020 and senior achievement award in 2023. He also holds an honor award by the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Hour Magazine, Detroit continuously since 2003, Marquis Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care since 1994, Consumer Guide to America’s Top Ophthalmologist since 2002 and Castle–Connoly Best Doctors in America since 2005. He was recognized among the top 1% of Ophthalmologists in the United States as a US News & World Reports’ Top Doctor in 2011. He serves on the Board of Directors of Leader Dogs for the Blind.
