Biography

Richard E Royal, MD, FACS has joined Maine Medical Partners – Surgical Care, in the Division of Surgical Oncology. He came to Maine from the M D Anderson Cancer Center where he was a tenured Professor in Surgery. Prior to that, he was a Senior Investigator at the Surgery Branch in the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Royal received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University, School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He went on to complete several fellowships including two fellowships in Surgical Oncology, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute. His clinical interests include the care of patients with melanoma and skin cancers, soft tissue sarcomas, as well as patients with rare GI tumors including peritoneal disease. He is an expert in the delivery of regional therapy for cancer including limb perfusion, liver perfusion and HIPEC. He has extensive research in the immunotherapy of melanoma and pancreas cancer and has been involved in promoting the interdisciplinary care of patients at a national level. He is the recipient of several awards in patient care.
