Professor Julian Smith, MBBS, MS, MSurgEd, FRACS, FACS, MAMSE, FFSTRCSEd, FCSANZ, FAICD Prof Julian Smith has been Head of the Department of Surgery (School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health) at Monash University and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash Health since 2001. He under took general and cardiothoracic surgery training in Australia and completed a Master of Surgery in cardiac transplantation at the University of Melbourne. Overseas fellowship positions were held at Stanford University (USA) and Papworth Hospital (UK). He returned to the Alfred Hospital as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Deputy Head of the Heart and Lung Transplant Service until he took up his current appointments. Prof Smith has been a life-long academic surgeon. His early research was in the area of heart and lung transplantation and artificial heart technology. He participated in the introduction of two left ventricular assist devices to Australia. Another major field of research has been in minimally invasive surgical techniques including robotic assistance. He introduced the Heartport minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques to Australia and has collaborated extensively with mechanical engineers at Monash University on robotic applications of nanotechnology. He was the first to apply the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database in Australia and has been a key driver of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons (ANZSCTS) Cardiac Surgery Database. Prof Smith has over 450 (last 5 yr = 100 ; h-index = 42 ; > 6,000 citations ; 9 with > 100 citations) peer-reviewed publications including recent articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the leading cardiac surgery journals – the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 2018, was an inaugural inductee into the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators and recently served on the AMSE Special Committee as an international member.
