Dr. James Ellsmere serves as the Head of the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Dalhousie University. He pursued his undergraduate studies in electrical engineering before transitioning to medicine, completing both medical school and residency at Dalhousie University. Dr. Ellsmere further honed his expertise through clinical fellowships in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Therapeutic Endoscopy at Harvard Medical School. He also holds a Masters in Medical Informatics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Joining Dalhousie University in 2007, Dr. Ellsmere currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Surgery. His research endeavors are centered on the development and assessment of innovative techniques aimed at enhancing the management of gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases. In his clinical practice, he specializes in Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, and Therapeutic Endoscopy. Dr. Ellsmere plays a significant role in healthcare leadership, serving as the co-director of the Nova Scotia Health Bariatric program and acting as the clinical lead for the QEII Health Science Centre ERCP program. Additionally, he fulfills the role of program director for the Advanced Gastrointestinal Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at Dalhousie, contributing to the education and training of future surgeons in the field.
