Jacob Moalem, MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery and Endocrinology, was recruited to the University of Rochester in 2008 to establish a program in Endocrine Surgery and to elevate the level of care that patients with benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands receive. Born in Jerusalem, Dr. Moalem received his BS and MS from the University at Buffalo and his MD from SUNY Downstate. He became interested in Endocrine Surgery during residency at RWJUH, where he served as Executive Chief Resident. He then pursued Fellowship training UCSF. Dr. Moalem brings expertise in minimally invasive thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, and adrenalectomy. His elective clinical practice focuses exclusively on these operations, and he performs > 350 operations per year. Dr. Moalem has also made significant academic contributions. He has authored numerous publications and textbook chapters, and presented his research at many national meetings. Locally, he lectures and teaches colleagues on topics related to the operations in which he specializes. Certified by the ABS, Dr. Moalem is licensed in NY, NJ, and California. He is an active member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), where he has chaired the Resident and Associates’ Society, the Young Fellows’ Association, and now serves as Governor and President of the NY state Chapter. In the American Medical Association (AMA), he Chairs the Young Physician’s Caucus and serves as Delegate representing the ACS. He is a recipient of the AMA’s Foundation Award. Dr. Moalem is also recognized as a leader at home. At the U of R, he has received many honors and awards, including the Chief Residents’ Teaching Award, the iCare ‘Bronze Star’ award (twice) and the Patient and Family Centered Care Top Performers Award (twice). Recently, he was elected to AOA. Dr. Moalem is also very active in community organizations, and is a proud father of 3 children who are the joys of his life.
